Door stop tutorial
I’ve seen a couple of doorstops floating round the internets recently. It seemed like a good idea, until I remembered that I have a mobile 7 month old rampaging round the house putting everything in her mouth. Fabric filled with rice to get all nice and soggy? Ewww. So I decided to go for an over-the-door stop instead. Here’s the handy tutorial so you can do it yourself!
Feeling brave enough? Then let’s begin…
First finish cutting out the neckband and sleeves for the top you started a month ago but didn’t have interfacing to finish. Then get on with sewing the top up. Realise the interfacing doesn’t interface very well, but decide not to worry about it. Work steadily and patiently, pressing all the seams properly, making sure it’s all going to look really good when it’s done. Feel proud of yourself for being able to make something as cool as this top. Stop before setting the sleeves in to see if baby wants a snack. Watch baby for a while to see if she’s going to sit up on her own again. Decide to try the top on. Realise it’s too big. Feel disappointed, but remarkably calm, especially considering that it’s taken a large chunk of your day. Think that you should just finish the top, seeing as you’ve got this far. Get discouraged and decide to make the cushion cover you’ve been wanting to get to for about a month instead. How hard can a couple of squares and a zip be? Cut the pieces out and get on with putting in the invisible zip. Struggle a bit with the first side. End up gathering the second side a bit while sewing the zip on. Decide to just iron it out and hope it’s not too noticeable. Start sewing up the side. Realise that the machine is making ridiculously long stitches because you didn’t adjust it back after putting in the gathering stitches for the sleeves. Also realise that that’s why the zip went wonky. Unpick all the stitches from the side and the zip. Can’t be bothered to put the invisible zipper foot back on. Wander into kitchen and eat a digestive. Want to actually finish a project today. Decide to make the door stop you thought of on Wednesday. Get out the crazy blue vintage fabric. You know, the one you bought on ebay and didn’t have a clue what to do with once you got it. Measure it over the door to check the size. Cut off a wide-ish strip. Fold it in half and fastidiously iron it nice and flat. Sew up side one. So far so good. Sew up side two. You can do it! Get out the half-empty bag of rice you bought for crafting, and the big funnel. Place funnel in open end and pour in entire contents of bag. Realise what you feared all along – there isn’t enough rice. Seeing as it’s after 7, you can’t get any more tonight. Lie down on sofa and send husband out for a bag of chips.
